JWSS celebrates Racial Harmony Day!

Hi everyone

Have you wondered what the theme is for the Racial Harmony Day this year? Let us share with you....

The Racial Harmony Day (RHD)'s theme this year is 'Many Faces, One Singapore'. The theme aims to remind us that the multi-racial nature of Singapore is unique and racial harmony is something that we need to work together to achieve and not take for granted.

Also, MOE has organised a Racial Harmony logo contest, bringing together a group of students and partners before coming up with this logo. One of our NE Ambassadors is one of the contributors too.

The MOE Racial Harmony logo is in the shape of a heart, representing both the brotherhood of Singaporeans and the deep emotional, visercal bond that we all share. Red is also the colour of passion and energy, representing how we as a country are moving forward and boldly embracing our challenges and future.This heart is also made up of four people, all joined together in a joyous embrace in a collective dance as they live in harmony. Where they have joined hands, there is a wonderful coming together of energy and efforts, and the yellow represents a bright light shining forth that illuminates our way and progress forward into the future.

The MOE Racial Harmony logo is created by the combined efforts and talents of our students and teachers. A group of primary and secondary students came together to brainstorm the possible concepts and designs for the logo. They were facilitated by Ms Pushpalathan D/O Krishnan and Mr Lim Jit Chay of Evergreen Secondary School. A group of students from Temasek Design School, Temasek Polytechnic then helped to capture the school students’ ideas in a few possible designs.The students are:Wyncy Tan, Temasek Design School, Christine Francis Lim Hui Yu, Temasek Design School, Lam Chee An, Temasek Design School, Tan Jian Rong, Benjamin, Temasek Design School, Jeremy Toh, Clementi Town Secondary, Ho Si Ying, Jurong West Secondary, Noor Fajrina Begum, Ping Yi Secondary, Beverly Ng, Woodlands Ring Secondary, Jasmir Kumar, River Valley Primary and Vanitha D/O Kaalimuthu, White Sands Primary.

NE Ambassador Training - Part 2

NE AMBASSADOR TRAINING PART 2 –

HERITAGE TRAIL (DISCOVERING CHINATOWN)

During the June holidays, the NE Ambassadors went for our second round of training at Chinatown. The objectives of this training are for us to be equipped with presentation and leadership skills. Let us share with you what happened on that day ….

After we gathered at 8am in the morning, we headed for Chinatown. It was on a weekday and our cheerful chattering broke the silence of the quiet Chinatown. 2 of our ambassadors were tasked to host the Ice-breaker games which we were taught from the previous training and we started this contest of winning the most amount of money tokens so that we can claim snacks and sweets for our teams later.

Why were we so engrossed in listening to the coach? This session required us to be equipped with all the facts before we present to the rest of the team as part of our assessment for the presentation skills and competence in delivery of information. This is the lecture room that we had one of our training sessions in.

Finally, our turn to present the skills we had acquired over the past two days. Time to share with our peers what we are capable of!

The three days of training ended off with an interesting prize presentation. Do the various prizes they have received show you anything about them?

Everyone of us went back home with a consensus that we have benefited from this training programme and we are now more confident to share our knowledge gained with a bigger crowd of audience. Hooray for the trainers! This training has made our school holidays more fruitful!

NE Ambasador training - Part 1

NE AMBASSADOR TRAINING PART 1 – HERITAGE TRAIL (DISCOVERING CHINATOWN)

The NE Ambassadors went out for our first training of the year during the March holidays!

Where did we go? Yes, Chinatown! We were first introduced to our trainers. We were quite quiet initially but after playing the ice-breakers games, we started to open up and became very comfortable with one another.

We were all ready to set out to explore Chinatown!

Have you heard of the ‘Street of Death’? This bears a very significant meaning. It used to be a street that people headed for the smoking of opium. We were all busy taking down notes as we had to present in the next training in June!

Here are a few snapshots that we saw on the streets of Chinatown. Besides tourists, we realized that many elderly stay in this area too.

We explored the individual shops through a mini Amazing Race. Look at how competitive we were!
Oh my! You mean the Chinese uses seahorses, bats and snakes as medication?

We must not only care about the present but the past and future of Singapore too! We explored the future of Singapore’s city development at the Urban Redevelopment Authority which is located in Chinatown too.

There is one more thing that we will miss. And that is the food sold in Chinatown! We had our meals packed from the famous Maxwell market!

It was fun exploring Chinatown during the training and we are looking forward to share all these with our peers!
